Payanam tells the story of a flight hijack that takes place at the Tirupati Airport. Nagarjuna plays the role of an NSG Commando and the film deals with his emotions while going through the period of hijack.
Payanam is produced by Prakash Raj under the banner of Silent Movies. The film was shot using RED camera, handled by cinematographer K. V. Guhan. Pravin Mani has composed the background score of the film. Director Radha Mohan and Prakash Raj had fully focus on story line, which is without a heroine and songs.

Director Radha Mohan who is known for the family-oriented romance and drama films Azhagiya Theeye, Mozhi and Abhiyum Naanum is venturing into the genre of action with his latest film titled as Payanam. Telugu superstar Nagarjuna plays the lead role in the film that also has Prakash Raj, Poonam Kaur and Sana Khan in important roles. The film is bilingual venture, also made in Telugu as Gaganam with the same cast.
